Abia State Joins The United Nation To Celebrate World Gender Equality Day

FIC Report (Abia State) – The Governor of the State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, has been commended for his irrevocable commitment in giving Women their pride of place in the State.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Gender Matters and Political Inclusion, Mrs. Francess Olisa Ogbonnaya made the call during the 2022 World Gender Equality Day with the Theme, “Gender Equality in an Unequal Political Space” at Women Development and Skill Acquisition Centre, Umuahia while interacting with Women Journalists, NAWOJ led by Comrade Beatrice Okezie Odoemelam on the celebration of the 2022 World Gender Equality Day.

Mrs. Ogbonnaya explained that the United Nation has set aside August 26 of every year to mark the event with a view to ascertaining the general well being of the Women , their rights and challenges.

She noted that the Program is part of the will of the Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu and his Wife to recognize the importance of Women and called on Women to always be brave and meticulous to achieve their aim in the political space.

The Special Adviser stated that the Gender Equality Day is also geared at checkmating violence against Women adding that a society that values Women and Men are safer and healthier.

Mrs. Ogbonnaya charged Women in positions of authority to exhibit high level of responsibility, resilience, bravery and their God-given talents in the discharge of their duties and solicited for the appointment of more Women at all levels of decision making for peaceful co-existence and the socio economic development of the State and Nation at large.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Deaconess Rose Urenta also called on Women to always uphold their dignity and respect.

Delivering her speech, the Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, Deaconess Urenta noted that the Day is targeted at empowering as well as celebrating the significance of Women in society which she described as a direction to encourage the activities of Women in the world.

The Commissioner while describing the Theme for the 2022 World Gender Equality Day “Gender Equality in an Unequal Political Space” as adequate, pointed out that Women are encouraged through legislation and Gender-Friendly Policies to enable them to participate actively in political decision-making.

She thanked the Wife of the Governor, Deaconess Nkechi Ikpeazu for carrying Women along in the scheme of things and encouraged Women to always emulate those Women that have made tremendous impacts in society especially in the political terrain of Nigeria.

Speaking, the State PDP Women Leader, Mrs. Charity Emenike thanked the Wife of the Governor, Deaconess Ikpeazu for his love and passion for boosting the well being of Abia Women and called on Women not to be discouraged.

In her speech, the General Manager, Abia Tourism Development Board, Onyekachi Atuloma pointed out that the political-will of Women is important and helpful to humanity as Women are known for love and support in Politics which their number has always been an added advantage.

She, however, called on Women to always support Women in politics for the overall development of society.

Contributing in their different remarks, the State Women leader, Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, Princess Ngozi Nwaguru, Mrs. Ngozi Nwangwa and the National President, National Association of Abia State Students, Comrade Agbara Bethel described Women as partners in progress and reiterated the need for total inclusion of Women with disabilities in the scheme of things.
