FG donates N20 million for Journals

ABUJA – (Federal Ministry of Science & Technology Report) – As part of the efforts to boost research and innovation in the country, the Federal Government on Monday donated N20 million to four national academies for the publication of professional journals.

The four academies are the Nigerian Academy of Letters, the Nigerian Academy of Science, the Nigerian Academy of Social Science and Nigerian Academy of Engineering.

This was contained in a release issued by the Publicity Department of the Ministry on Monday March 25, 2019. The report informed that the Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu (Dr), who made the donation enjoined the academies to strive to integrate their knowledge, especially as innovations are at the reach of everyone. He inferred that knowledge cannot be compartmentalized in this fast-growing internet age.

Ogbonnaya Onu urged the science academies to explore the benefits accruing to the social sciences, in order to solve some societal problems and boost innovations. He further noted that this will make it easier to solve critical national problems when the country brings together the best brains that exist in the country.

He implied that in solving scientific problems, one needs to relate to the environment. He also commended them for their contributions to national development and charged them to continue to harness the potentials in the country to make it greater.

“it is high time, we move away from just having potentials, but utilize them to move Nigeria forward, the Minister affirmed.

In his remarks, the President of the Nigerian Academy of Science, Mosto Onuoha (Prof) thanked the Minister for his thoughtfulness and innovative ideas in considering the academies for cash donations.

He averred that the publication of academic journals by academies had suffered due to lack of finance, assuring the Minister that the money would be well utilized to advance the frontiers of knowledge, research and innovations. He thanked the Minister for the gesture and called for more collaborations between the Academies and the Ministry.
