FG Hands Over 4.5km Uvu Community Erosion Control Works

ASKIRA, BORNO STATE – (Ecological Fund Office Report) – The Nigerian Government has commissioned and handed over to the Borno State Government a 4.5km drainage system with culverts for the benefit of Uvu Community in Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.

While performing the official commissioning and handover ceremony on behalf of the President lately, the House of Representatives Member representing ldeato LGA of Imo State, who is a member of the House Committee on Environment, Austin Chukwukere recognised the great agricultural potential of the people of Uvu Community which according to him had necessitated the quick intervention from the Federal Government.

He said that the intervention came as one of the developmental packages meant not only to solve the ecological challenges, but to productively engage the Uvu Community and entice them back to farm which is in line with the policy thrust of the present administration in terms of agriculture and food security. He reiterated that the present administration’s policy on the diversification of economy would be complimented with the provision of infrastructural frameworks that will address the challenges and threats to lives and property.

Austin Chukwukere implored the benefitting community to reciprocate the kind gesture of the Federal Government by optimizing the reclaimed land for other developmental and agricultural purposes.

Earlier in her speech, the Permanent Secretary in the Ecological Fund Office, Habiba Lawal (Dr), who was represented by the Project Manager, Sanni Baba thanked the contractor for the timely completion of the project. She explained to the audience that the handover ceremony was meant to achieve a dual purpose of enabling the host community to take over and exercise ownership over the project and to ensure its care and sustainability. She also appealed to the Uvu Community that the resources which the Federal Government had committed on the project should not be allowed to waste.

The Emir of Uvu Community in Askira Uba LGA, Ismaila Mamza II who received the team from Abuja during a courtesy visit to his palace expressed profound gratitude to the Federal Government and President Muhamadu Buhari for the gesture.

In appreciation, the community members expressed their joy over the project and displayed their cultural dance skills for their admiration. Also, students, pupils and teachers within the project community stood still to welcome the team from the Presidency as the entire community pledged their total support for Mr President’s second term in office.

Present at the event was the representative of Borno State Government and community leaders.
