The House of Representatives during its plenary on Thursday, 14 November 2019 urged the Federal Ministry of Health to commence the rehabilitation and equipping of Primary Health Care Centres across the 36 states of the Federation and the Federal Capital territory for effective health care delivery.
Honourable Taofeek Abimbola Ajilesoro who sponsored the motion said that primary health is the essential health care made available to an individual in a community at a cost that he or she can afford and for any individual to function and express one’s potential to the full, one must be in good health.
However, most Primary Health Care Centres across the Federation and Federal Capital Territory are either uncompleted, in a state of disrepair or without equipment to function efficiently and effectively thus leaving them in a deplorable condition.
The House is worried that when people fall sick with minor ailments like malaria or pains, the Primary Health Centres are not equipped with drugs and staff to function effectively thus; the inability to address numerous health issues  has  contributed to the persistent  high level of poverty and the weakness of primary health care systems.
Although the political instability, corruption, limited institutional capacity and unstable Economy are major factors responsible for the poor development of primary health care in Nigeria.
The House urged the Federal Ministry of Health to commence rehabilitation of Primary Health Care Centres as well as employ all cadres of health care providers in Primary Health Care Centres to ensure effective and efficient health care delivery.
