Nigeria is in the Period of energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. This was revealed by the Minister of State, Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva. The Minister made the revelation while delivering his address at the 5th National Council on Hydrocarbons, holding in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State on Thursday, 26th November, 2020.

However, Sylva, who was represented at the event by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Mr. Bitrus Bako Nabasu, mni, added that while the process of transition may take some time, it is extremely necessary that we begin to explore expanding and deepening the usage of the abundant reserves of both oil and gas.

Speaking further, Chief Sylva restated that it was in demonstration of the Federal Government’s commitment to maximizing the potentials of Gas that he declared the year 2020 as the year of Gas in Nigeria and also lunched the Nigeria Gas Transportation Network Code. The Minister explained that, the Nigeria Gas Transportation Network Code is a contractual framework between the gas transportation network operators and gas shippers that specifies the terms and guidelines for operation and use of Gas Network.

In his welcome address, the Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Hon. Friday Benson Konbowei remarked that Bayelsa State is safe and hospitable. He added that the Oil exploration and exploitation entities operatiing in the state have never been in doubt of the hospitality of the people of Bayelsa State. He however sued for a better deal for Bayelsa State as we explore our gas potentials.

In an earlier address, the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Bitrus Bako Nabasu, mni, who’s speech was read by the Director, Human Resource Management of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Dr. Famous Eseduwo, informed that a total of 39 Memorandums were received and critically examined during the Technical Session.
